Recently, I had the privilege of attending my first-ever documentary premiere at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina with Left Side of the Lion Media.
This special event featured a film about Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, an influential educator, minister, scholar, and social activist, is often regarded as one of the most powerful voices in the American civil rights movement.
Mays was known as a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many other leaders, Mays dedicated his life to championing education, equality, and dignity for all. It’s always refreshing to learn and get to know someone who advocates for unity.
Being part of the editing team for such an inspiring project made this premiere even more meaningful.
Dr. Mays’ legacy is rich with motivation, offering a story of perseverance and influence that spans generations.
He believed in the transformative power of education and lived by the principle that excellence and integrity were paramount for achieving social justice. Our goal was to capture this influence, ensuring his life’s message could continue to inspire new audiences.
Sitting in the theater, I felt the weight of that responsibility of “dot your i’s and cross you t’s”. And as the final credits rolled, the audience rose to their feet, applauding.
That moment confirmed for me that every late night and meticulous edit was worth it. We still have minor things to change, but it flowed with ease.
Bringing Mays’ story to life on screen felt like a testament to the strength and importance of a legacy rooted in justice, resilience, and hope.
This premiere was a humbling reminder of how crucial it is to preserve the stories of leaders like Dr. Mays, whose impact remains timeless.
This project wasn’t just about celebrating a historical figure; it was about honoring a legacy that continues to inspire, and hopefully, through this film, one that will influence countless others.
I am forever thankful for being a part of this experience.
